1967 Citroën DS 21 Le Caddy Cabriolet by Chapron
This car symbolizes the special status Henri Chapron enjoyed with Citroën. In July 1967, Chapron was therefore able to take delivery of this DS 21 with the new four-headlamp front (i.e. a 1968 model), before it was officially unveiled. In addition, this Le Caddy Cabriolet was Chapron’s own project, built without a customer order for it. Finished in two-tone dark red and black, with a beige interior, it was used by Chapron to illustrate his 1968 catalogue with photographs taken in the Bois de Boulogne, and was displayed on his stand at the 1967 Paris Motor Show.
The car was sold there to its first owner, M. Guy Marty, from Toulouse, who sold it in 1973 to Mme Albertine Baume, who owned a garage with her brother at Gap. Used only in the summer months, the Cabriolet was parked up over the winter, but one very cold year, the engine block froze and had to be replaced. In the 1980s, the car was repainted in light brown and on 29 December 1988, Mme Baume sold it to a dealer in Hamburg, who in turn sold it on to a Dr Thomas Hermann in March 1989. He used it sparingly before selling it in 2004 to Nico Michon, a well-known Citroën collector in Belgium, who had it repainted in red and black. In 2007, it was bought by another Citroën enthusiast, Bart Van Tongeren, who decided to carry out a complete restoration, preserving the originality of the car as far as possible. The restoration began in 2009 and was carried out by the Blikwerk Garage at Drachten in Holland, and took three years. The interior was retrimmed with the same beige leather as Chapron had used and the car was given a complete mechanical overhaul. The body was repainted in Royal Blue, one of the colours offered by Chapron in 1967, with a dark blue hood, and an air-conditioning system, to the same specification as fitted by Chapron, was installed.
Once the restoration had been finished, the car was displayed in 2014 at the concours d'élégance at Paleis Het Loo in Holland, where it won first prize in its class. In February 2016, Thierry Dehaeck bought the car at auction during the Rétromobile week in Paris. Three years later, it was included in the exhibition devoted to Citroën’s centenary at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels, and it took part in other major events such as the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2025, the Rallye International Chapron and the Zoute Concours d’Elegance, where it won first prize in its class.
Dehaeck’s collection today features three DS Cabriolets from virtually the same period, each with its own special characteristics; this Chapron Le Caddy Cabriolet represents the ultimate version, on account of its rarity, exclusivity and official Chapron hallmark.
In superb condition, complete with its special Robergel wheel trims and Jaeger dashboard, it comes with numerous documents (certificates from Chapron and Citroën, its FIVA ID card, photographs from when it was new and of the restoration, and various magazine articles).
The very first example of the Le Caddy with the new four-headlamp front, it will be welcomed at the most prestigious concours d'élégance, but can also easily be used for outings or rallies. This Chapron cabriolet is a historic model that deserves a special place in any Citroën or Chapron collection, of which it is sure to be one of the jewels.
