1969 Maserati Ghibli 4.7L Spyder with hardtop
The origin of this Maserati Ghibli Spyder is remarkably well documented, as is shown by the report by Adolfo Orsi, the undisputed international specialist in the marque, who drew on numerous archive documents. The first reference to the car appears in a telephone order, confirmed in a letter dated 30 October 1969 from Sport Auto Roma, the Maserati dealer in Rome, which specified that it was to be supplied to Sig. Amadeo Matacena, the owner of the company Caronte, the operator of a ferry service between Italy and Sicily. On 2 November, the assembly sheet for the Ghibli Spyder confirmed its colour, ‘Beige Metallizzato 160Y56’, white upholstery and the fitment of a hardtop and a Becker radio. On 10 December, a telex to Maserati from Sport Auto Roma requested the delivery date for the car; the manufacturer replied that it was with Ghia for the hardtop to be fitted, before confirming the following day, “We will deliver the car at the end of next week”. The delivery to Sport Auto Roma finally took place on 20 December, and it was then registered with the number ME 123999.
On 25 January, a few rectification jobs were carried out by Maserati, at 3152km. The final minor faults noted by Matacena (who pointed out in a letter that he had bought three Maseratis over the previous three years) were dealt with by the dealer in Naples. The report by Adolfo Orsi and the documents attached to it make for fascinating reading and convey the very personal relationship between the manufacturer, dealer and customer.
Matacena kept the car until 26 March 1981, when it was taken in part-exchange by the successor to Sport Auto Roma and then sold to Sig. Antonio Alberoni and registered in the Bologna region as BO 989093. Alberoni took great care of his car and had it repainted in its original colour as well as having the upholstery retrimmed to period specification. He also had Borrani wire wheels fitted, but held onto the original Campagnolo magnesium rims, and kept the car for nearly 20 years. It was on 12 July 2020 that Thierry Dehaeck bought the car from him, won over by its remarkably well-preserved original condition, as well as its history mapped out in documents from the period. He also bought a hardtop, which he then had restored to its original appearance, to put the final touch of authenticity to the car.
This important Ghibli Spyder won 1st prize in its class at the Zoute Concours at Knokke in 2022. As Thierry Dehaeck confirmed to us, it is regarded by the Maserati factory as the most authentic Spyder and obtained the highest score in its Maserati Classiche certification; for this reason, it has been requested by Maserati itself on several occasions, for media features and advertising purposes, as well as for the Milan Fashion Week in 2025 and then in Rome for an advertisement for the Aqua di Parma brand. It can currently be seen on the ‘Maserati Classiche Masters’ website to illustrate the section devoted to the model, and on the poster for the ‘GR8 International Car Show 2025’ in Belgium. It comes with a substantial history file comprising several documents relating to its past, including those mentioned above, as well as an owner’s manual, a period brochure, Maserati Classiche certification, its original warranty card, the old registration certificate in the name of Alberto Alberoni and a FIVA ID card ...
A rare model, with only 128 examples produced, it embodies the carefree way of life of 1960s Italy and of the film stars who liked to be seen at the wheel of fast and good-looking sports cars. A priceless witness to its time, it will be welcomed as an honoured guest at every classic car event.
Beyond its intrinsic rarity, the example presented here stands out for the consistency of its specification, the quality of its preservation, its impressive traceability and the wealth of period documentation. Its history, from its delivery in Rome in 1969 to its recent appearances under the auspices of Maserati, forms a veritable historical narrative.
A particularly complete classic car, whose authenticity and documented provenance are now major assets. A Ghibli Spyder intended as much for the discerning collector as for the enthusiast seeking an iconic, rare Italian car with a truly exceptional history.
