1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona by Pininfarina

There is an interesting aspect to this car’s history in that it was displayed in January 1971 at the Brussels Motor Show, on the Garage Francorchamps stand, Ferrari’s importer in Belgium. It was ordered from Ferrari on 15 September 1970 by Jacques Swaters and delivered to Belgium on 18 December that year, finished in ‘Nocciola Metallizzato 106-M-27 Salchi’ with a black leather interior. It was fitted with air-conditioning as an option.

At the Motor Show, it found its first owner, who was French, which explains why the car was equipped with yellow headlamps, before changing hands in 1985 and then on 1 October 1990, when it was bought by a M. Poinsot from Issy-les-Moulineaux, who registered it as ‘5045 PF 92’. He sold it on 30 August 1995 to a Belgian enthusiast, who had it repainted in black and registered as ‘1-OA-544’, before carrying out a complete mechanical overhaul in 2007 and 2008.

In 2015, the car was bought by Gipimotor, a leading Belgian specialist in prestige, sports and competition cars, and on 22 May that year, it appeared at the Spa Classic gathering with the Belgian collector and former director of the Garage Francorchamps, Philippe Lancksweert. A few months later, in autumn 2015, Gipimotor decided to return the car to its superb original livery of ‘Nocciola Metallizzato’ and to retrim the black leather upholstery, before putting it up for sale. This beautiful Daytona then made several public appearances in 2016, at the Spa Classic gathering in May with Lancksweert, in the visitor parking at Le Mans Classic in July, at the Auto e Moto D’Epoca show at Padua in October, and at the Interclassics show in Brussels. It was there that Thierry Dehaeck noticed the car and bought it, won over by its history, superb condition and specification.

The following year, from July to September 2017, it was part of the exhibition at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels devoted to Ferrari’s 70th anniversary, then in September, it could be seen in the Ferrari Club enclosure at Chantilly Arts & Élégance. In 2023, it took part in the Antwerp Concours d’élégance and the ‘Colombo Rally’, both in Belgium.

Today, it is displayed in the building magnificently fitted out by Thierry Dehaeck, alongside other classic Ferraris, including a Daytona Spyder, with which it forms an interesting duo. It is a desirable version with fixed headlights under an acrylic glass cover, before the change to retractable lights. The 365 GTB/4 Daytona was the last Ferrari from this era with a front-mounted V12, before the advent of the Berlinetta Boxer, and its 350bhp launched it to a top speed of 280km/h. With styling by Leonardo Fioravanti, it was an imposing machine with its huge bonnet and streamlined roof.

The restoration by Gipimotor was carried out to the highest standards and with the utmost care (as can be seen from a DVD recording the work), with the result that this Daytona berlinetta is now in virtually irreproachable condition. The magazine Rétroviseur, moreover, devoted a comprehensive feature to the car in December 2019. Supplied with its Ferrari Classiche certification, a report by Marcel Massini, its factory build sheet, an FIVA ID card, a photo from the 1971 Brussels Motor Show and numerous more recent photographs, various catalogues and manuals, Thierry Dehaeck’s Daytona has less than 90,000km on the clock and is certainly one of the finest examples available, with, in addition, a colour rarely seen on this model. Its next private owner, the sixth, can look forward to the extraordinary thrill of driving it on the road or taking part in top historic events.
