Dans ses installations et peintures immersives et vibrantes, Sol Calero puise dans son héritage latino-américain pour créer des œuvres qui mettent en avant et célèbrent sa culture. En explorant la relation longtemps difficile entre sa région du monde et l'Europe et l'Amérique, elle cherche à remettre en question la façon dont les Latinos ont été caricaturés. Elle décrit sa motivation en disant : « J'ai commencé à me demander ce qu'aurait été l'art latino-américain si nous n'avions pas eu une si grande influence européenne, si nous n'étions pas si concentrés sur ce qu'il y avait à l'extérieur et si nous pensions davantage à ce que nous pouvions faire “ici” ». Elle bouscule les stéréotypes latino-américains en présentant des espaces peints de couleurs vives où sont accrochées des peintures débordant de fruits tropicaux. Dans le cadre d'un projet, elle a transformé une galerie en un hybride de salon de beauté et de studio de salsa. Non contente de se concentrer sur son propre travail, Sol Calero co-dirige également un espace de projet, appelé Kinderhook & Caracas.

In her immersive, vibrant installations and paintings, Sol Calero mines her Latin American heritage to create works that foreground and celebrate its culture. Exploring the long-fraught relationship between her region of the world and Europe and America, she seeks to challenge the ways in which Latinos have been caricatured. She describes her motivation by saying, “I started wondering what Latin American art would have been if we hadn’t had such a big European influence, if we weren’t so focused on what was out there and more thinking what could we do ‘here.’” She sends up Latin American stereotypes by presenting brightly painted spaces hung with paintings bursting with tropical fruit. For one project, she transformed a gallery into a hybrid of a functioning beauty salon and salsa studio. Not content to focus only on her own work, Calero also co-runs a project space, called Kinderhook & Caracas.
