This Alfa Romeo is exceptional because of its history. It was the last new car purchased by Philippe Étancelin, known as “Fifi,” an iconic and popular figure in auto racing, famous for his backward-facing cap, who competed from 1926 to 1953, in numerous races, including several international Grand Prix events, behind the wheel of his Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, Maseratis, and Talbot Lagos. He is the only driver to have competed in both the first Monaco Grand Prix, in 1929, and the first Formula 1 Grand Prix, in 1950.

As shown in photos from that era, he purchased this 2600 Sprint in March 1967 at the brand’s showroom on the Champs-Élysées, to commemorate his victory at the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans with his Alfa Romeo 8C 2.3-liter, which he shared with Luigi Chinetti, the future Ferrari importer in the United States.

This Alfa Romeo has always remained in the family and, in October 1981, was given to André Étancelin, the driver’s grandson, 10 days before the driver’s death. Still bearing its original license plate number “8351 FY 76,” it is in its original condition with its mink-gray bodywork. An expert report in the file states that the body shows signs of corrosion in certain areas—notably at the bottom of the doors and along the rocker panels—and will therefore need to be restored.

The mechanical components have been regularly maintained (with a total of €30,000 in invoices), and the odometer reads 58,000 km, the original mileage. The beige leather interior shows only slightly patinated.

The car is sold with a spare key and various documents, including a copy of the certificate of transfer signed by Philippe Étancelin and a photo of the driver taken on the same street 34 years apart—in 1933 with the Alfa 8C and in 1967 with the Sprint coupe.

In addition to the intrinsic qualities of this Alfa Romeo coupe—with its twin-cam 6-cylinder engine and Bertone bodywork—this car boasts an extraordinary history, linked to one of the most popular French drivers of his era. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity...
