1995 Ferrari F355 GTS

Introduced in 1994 as the successor to the 348, the Ferrari F355 marked a major step in the history of Maranello’s V8 berlinettas. While it retained the overall mid-rear-engined layout of its predecessor, it benefitted from extensive development to its engine as well as its chassis, aerodynamics and ease of use. With the F355, Ferrari succeeded in combining superlative performance with a level of balance and driving pleasure that ushered in a new generation of models.

At its heart was the extraordinary naturally-aspirated 3496cc V8, its ‘355’ name a direct reference to the 3.5-litre capacity of its engine and five valves per cylinder. Capable of producing 380bhp at 8250rpm, or nearly 109bhp per litre, without resorting to forced induction, the engine was a remarkable demonstration of Ferrari’s expertise in high-revving naturally-aspirated engines.

Mated here to the desirable six-speed manual gearbox, operated by Ferrari's traditional open-gate metal gear change, the V8 enabled the F355 to reach 100km/h in less than five seconds and a top speed of approximately 295km/h. But more than these figures, it was above all its mechanical character that would make the F355 one of the iconic Ferraris of its time: the immediate response to the throttle, the dramatic way in which the revs soar and the characteristic sound of Ferrari’s five-valve V8.

This 355 GTS has an especially clear history. It was sold new in Rome by SA.MO.CAR, one of Ferrari’s historic dealers in the Italian capital, and delivered to its first owner on 16 June 1995. Since then, the car has had only five owners, including the current one, and its maintenance history is detailed in its stamped-up service book as well as all its documentation. A particularly interesting part of its history took place in France. From 2000–2006, the car was regularly sent to Auvergne Moteurs, ensuring that it was scrupulously maintained by the excellent specialist Philippe Gardette, renowned for his work on Ferraris. Outside this period, it was maintained in the Ferrari dealer network, thus contributing to its continuous history. Its current owner, a former Porsche enthusiast who in the end succumbed to the siren song of Maranello, bought the car through an intermediary in Paris; it has covered only 65,050km since leaving the factory and is in most attractive condition. It still has its regularly stamped service book and its different manuals and documents, stored in their elegant original Ferrari leather wallet. All factors of particular importance for a car of this generation, which enable us to chart its history ever since it was delivered new in Rome.

The last representative of an era when Ferrari’s V8 berlinetta still offered the combination of pop-up headlamps, a high-revving naturally-aspirated engine and a manual gearbox with a gated change, the F355 now holds a special place in the lineage of Maranello's sports cars. In this GTS version, it adds the exceptional pleasure of giving free rein to its tuneful V8, simply by removing its roof panel.
