Lorsque Ferrari se décide à produire une voiture à moteur central, c'est aussi avec un tout nouveau moteur dont la formule a été expérimentée en course: un 12 cylindres à plat, qui donne son nom à la voiture, "Berlinetta Boxer". D'abord 4,4 litres, il évolue en 5 litres et reçoit une alimentation à injection sur la version 512 BBi, développant alors 340 ch. Atteignant 285 km/h, cette voiture fait entrer Ferrari dans l'ère des supercars.

L’exemplaire présenté a été livré neuf au Garage Francorchamp SA, en Belgique, le 6 mai 1982. Elle fut expédiée aux USA l’année suivante et y demeura jusqu’en 2010, année où elle fut ramenée en Europe par un collectionneur anglais. En février 2014, elle changea de mains, toujours en Angleterre et fut entretenue par le spécialiste Bob Houghton Ltd dans le Gloucestershire. En 2015, elle a bénéficié d’une importante remise en état, et l’année suivante, à 27 906 km une grande révision mécanique a été effectuée avec remplacement des courroies, remplacement de l’embrayage, de l’alternateur, révision du boitier de direction et du compresseur de climatisation. C’est le propriétaire suivant qui s’est attaché à l’obtention du précieux sésame, la fameuse certification Ferrari Classiche qui confirme la concordance des numéros de châssis, de carrosserie, de moteur et de boîte de vitesses. Afin qu’il soit délivré en avril 2018, il aura été nécessaire de remettre un système d’échappement d’origine. Un dossier de factures de plus de 70 000 £ entre 2014 et 2018 témoigne des travaux effectués. Affichant aujourd’hui moins de 30 000 km au compteur, et un état enviable, avec une peinture de belle qualité, et une sellerie patinée juste comme il le faut, cette superbe BB certifiée est un exemplaire de choix.

When Ferrari decided to produce a mid-engined car, it completely re-designed the engine, with a set-up tested on the race track : a flat 12-cylinder engine which gave its name to the car : "Berlinetta Boxer". Initially 4.4-litres, this grew to 5-litres and received fuel-injection on the 512 BBi version, producing 340 bhp. Capable of 285 km/h, the car put Ferrari into the Supercar league.

 

This particular example was delivered new to Garage Francorchamp SA in Belgium on the 6th of May 1982. It was shipped to the USA the following year and remained there until 2010, when it was brought back to Europe by an English collector. In February 2014, it changed hands (still in England) and was serviced by specialist Bob Houghton Ltd in Gloucestershire. It had a major restoration carried out in 2015 and the following year, a major mechanical overhaul was done when the mileage was at 27,906 km, including the replacement of belts, the clutch and the alternator, as well as servicing of the power steering and the air conditioning compressor. It was the subsequent owner who took initiative to obtain the highly sought-after Ferrari Classiche certification, attesting to the authenticity of the chassis, body, engine and gearbox numbers. In order to secure certification in April 2018, it was necessary to have the original exhaust system refitted. A file of invoices totalling over £70,000 between 2014 and 2018 bears witness to the work carried out. With less than 30,000 km on the clock today, in desirable condition, as well as featuring high-quality paintwork and upholstery that has aged perfectly, this superb certified BB is a truly exceptional example.
