Vik Muniz emprunte des images à l'histoire de l'art, aux médias et à la réalité pour les manipuler. À partir de matériaux issus de la vie quotidienne, tels que le chocolat, le diamant, le pigment, l'argile ou la poussière, Vik Muniz reconstruit une image avant de prendre les photographies et de se débarrasser des originaux. À première vue, le résultat de ses manipulations ne ressemble pas à une photographie, mais aux travaux d'un magicien ou d'un virtuose. Si ses photographies nous rappellent un héritage culturel collectif, elles défient en même temps la perception du spectateur. Tout est redessiné et réinterprété. Renforçant notre sentiment de familiarité à l'égard de choses différentes, Vik Muniz nous trompe et encourage notre capacité à regarder la réalité et à l'analyser ; « la vision est avant tout une forme d'intelligence, et la reconnaissance ou l'identification une sorte de confort ».

Vik Muniz borrows images from art history, media and reality, to manipulate them. Starting with materials taken from everyday life, such as chocolate, diamond, pigment, clay or dust, Vik Muniz reconstructs an image before taking the photographs, and getting rid of the originals. At first glance, the result of his manipulations do not resemble a photograph, but the works of a magician or a virtuoso. While his photographs remind us of a collective cultural heritage, they simultaneously challenge the viewer´s perception. Everything is redrawn and reinterpreted. Reinforcing our sense of familiarity toward different things, Vik Muniz deceives us and encourages our ability to look at reality and analyze it ; « the vision is primarily a form of intelligence, and recognition or identification a kind of comfort. »
