Plusieurs planches sont l’œuvre du célèbre peintre, dessinateur et graveur anglais William Hogarth.

L’ouvrage fut publié pour la première fois à Londres en 1723.

« This important work describes La Mottraye’s travels over a 26-year period which took him through Northern Europe to Tartary and the Levant. The plates are of particular interest, and include many signed by Hogarth which form part of his early work. They illustrate antiquities, objets d’art, and scenes from Eastern life. Especially interesting is a plate showing a dance at a Greek wedding, e.g. an Armenian, a Greek, a Moldavian, a peasant of the Archipelago, etc. The French Edition contains four plates which do not appear in the English version, and conversely lacks three which exist in the English version. The four new French plates are nos. 11 and 12 in v. 1 and 16 and 17 in vol. 2. They replace the English plates nos. 6, 7 and an unnumbered plate. La Mottraye, a Huguenot, had established himself in England. He began his journeys in 1696 with a tour through Scandinavia. He was very close to ××II of Sweden, and he visited Charles during his exile at Bender, and was employed in political affairs on his behalf » (Leonora Navari).

L’ouvrage intitulé Voyages en Anglois et en François en diverses provinces et places de la Prusse Ducale et Royale, de la Russie, de la Pologne, &c. (La Haye chez Adrien Moetjens, 1732) est parfois joint en complément des deux volumes.

Mors restaurés, reliures un peu frottées. Quelques légères rousseurs, quelques déchirures réparées aux figures.
