Janvier 1985 : deux Mitsubishi Pajero terminent en tête le rallye Paris-Dakar, pilotés par Patrick Zaniroli et Andrew Cowan. Ces prototypes passablement différents des versions de série ont été conçus et fabriqués par l'équipe de Bernard Maingret, basée à Pont-de-Vaux et choisie en 1982 par Mitsubishi pour briller en rallye-raid et faire connaître cette marque alors confidentielle en France.
La voiture que nous présentons est également un prototype non immatriculé, mais qui diffère des voitures "officielles" par des modifications moins poussées. Selon Thierry Viardot, responsable technique Dakar et ancien associé de Bernard Maingret, "on sait qu'une copie de ce genre avait été réalisée par un ancien mécano de Sonauto avec certaines pièces de récupération", et il est possible qu'il s'agisse de cette même voiture.
Bien réalisé et présenté aux couleurs Mitsubishi d'époque, ce Pajero a été acheté il y a trois ans par son actuel propriétaire pour courir en rallye-raid historique, avant qu'il ne change d'avis pour s'orienter vers la variante moderne du mythique rallye au volant d’un buggy. La préparation est très soignée, avec châssis tubulaire et arceau, caisse en polyester, suspensions partiellement modifiées, intérieur dépouillé et simplifié avec sièges baquets, dans le but de l'efficacité. Dans un état général attrayant, il nécessitera une révision sérieuse et constituera une excellente base pour tout amateur souhaitant s'engager en rallye-raid historique, tout en rappelant les grandes heures de Mitsubishi au Paris-Dakar.

January 1985: two Mitsubishi Pajero cars finished first in the Paris-Dakar rally, driven by Patrick Zaniroli and Andrew Cowan. Quite different from the production models, these prototypes were designed and built by Bernard Maingret’s team, based in Pont-de-Vaux and selected in 1982 by Mitsubishi to excel in rally raids and spread awareness of the brand, which was then relatively unknown in France.
This particular car is also an unregistered prototype but is different from ‘official’ cars, due to less extensive modifications. According to Thierry Viardot, Dakar's Technical Manager and former partner of Bernard Maingret, ‘we know that a replica of this type was built by a former Sonauto mechanic who used some salvaged parts’, and it is possible that this is the very same car.
Well-built and featuring the original Mitsubishi livery, this Pajero was purchased three years ago by its current owner to race in historic rally raid events, before he changed his mind and switched to the modern version of this legendary rally at the wheel of a buggy. The preparation is very meticulous, featuring a tubular chassis and roll cage, a polyester bodywork, partially modified suspension, and a stripped-back, simplified interior with bucket seats, all designed for efficiency. In an attractive overall condition, it will require a major service and will make an excellent base for any enthusiast wishing to take part in historic rally raid events, while reviving memories of Mitsubishi’s golden days in the Paris-Dakar.
