Commentaire :

Unique artist, Carlo Bugatti was a groundbreaking figure in the Italian decorative arts.

A native of Milan, he trained at the Brera Academy under the cabinetmaker Mentasti before opening his own studio in 1880.

Bugatti will therefore continue to expand his world, one that defies any stylistic definition, as an interior designer, architect, illustrator, furniture maker, and silverwork designer.

It is in furniture that he fully expresses all his craftsmanship and creativity.

The architectural structures, with their horseshoe arches or turned wooden columns, are embellished with rich, asymmetrical ornamentation, transforming each piece of furniture into a true sculptural object.

His formal vocabulary is a skillful blend of Japanese inspired influences, oriental styles and elements taken from the plant and animal kingdoms. Arabic calligraphy blends with reeds and birds, whilst the handles take the form of dragonflies or foliage, creating a pictorial and sculptural harmony.

Alongside these formal studies, he also experimented with bold combinations of materials. Bugatti favoured fine materials such as copper, shell, pewter, brass and, parchment, the full potential of which he exploited in the furniture he presented at the 1902 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Arts in Turin.

These materials are never left in their raw state but are worked using elaborate decorative techniques such as marquetry or embossing, creating an original decorative language.

The collection on display illustrates this. Formerly part of a Swiss estate, it represents a coherent and visionary corpus in which Bugatti displays the full boldness of his stylistic language to create a modern artwork.
