Le thème bacchique s'inscrit parfaitement dans la tradition locale des représentations de Bacchus corpulent, tradition inaugurée par Rubens.

Il a été suggéré le monogramme pourrait se lire CVDS correspondant à un nom tel que « C… van der S… dont le nom correspond à ces initiales à Anvers est Carel van der Stijnen, qui fut enregistré en 1671 comme apprenti en sculpture auprès du sculpteur Balthasar Geerts.
