Fille aînée du plus célèbre artiste australien, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Gabriella se met à peindre très tôt, notamment en aidant son père à compléter le fond pointilliste de ses toiles.

Son père, l’un des plus minutieux artistes du Désert Central, lui a transmis le goût pour les fonds particulièrement bien travaillés avec des techniques différentes mais aussi un grand sens des couleurs inspiré par le bush.

Les peintures de Gabriella décrivent « les histoires des Rêves » de sa grand-mère paternelle, Long Rose Nungala ainsi que les histoires qui lui ont été enseignées par les autres femmes agées de son entourage pendant ses années d’initiation.

Ici le thème est celui des Septs Soeurs Rêvant (la Voie lactée), Constellation de la Pleïades. Un vieil homme Tjakamarra poursuit une famille de sept jeunes soeurs Napaltjari avec l’intention de s’installer avec elles, car elles avaient la bonne correspondance de parenté avec lui.

Elles coururent dans le ciel pour lui échapper. Il les suivit et se transforma en une étoile « The Morning Star » et les filles en la constellation des « Seven Sisters ». On dit que les étoiles des sept soeurs ont touché très rapidement la terre des communautés du désert et ainsi toutes les femmes ont appris cette histoire.

As the eldest daughter of Australia’s most famous artist, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Gabriella began painting at a very young age, notably by helping her father complete the dot-style backgrounds of his canvases.

Her father, one of the most meticulous artists of the Central Desert, passed on to her a love for backgrounds that are particularly well-crafted using various techniques, as well as a keen sense of color inspired by the bush.

Gabriella’s paintings depict the “Dreaming stories” of her paternal grandmother, Long Rose Nungala, as well as the stories taught to her by the other elderly women in her community during her initiation years.

Here the theme is that of the Seven Dreaming Sisters (the Milky Way), the Pleiades constellation. An elderly Tjakamarra man pursued a family of seven young Napaltjari sisters with the intention of settling down with them, as they were of the right kinship to him.

They ran across the sky to escape him. He followed them and turned into a star, “The Morning Star,” and the girls into the constellation of the “Seven Sisters.” It is said that the stars of the seven sisters quickly reached the land of the desert communities, and so all the women learned this story.
