Elle est illustrée de 2 (sur 3) titres-frontispices et de 62 planches hors texte, dont 26 repliées, le tout gravé sur cuivre, et de deux figures dans le texte gravées sur bois.

« Dampier was the best known, and probably the most intelligent, of the famous group of buccaneers that tormented the Spaniards in the South Sea from 1680 to 1720. His industry in taking notes of all he saw was equalled by his pains in preserving them from the destruction. His first voyage, under Captain Swan in the Cygnet, took him from Virginia to Spanish America and across the Pacific to the East Indies. He traveled extensively in the Orient on several voyages which lasted from 1683 to 1691. It was on one of these trips that the first landing was made by the English on Australian shores, at the entrance of King Sound on the northwest coast, in 1688… Dampier’s book was so well received that the British Admiralty gave him a commission as captain in the Royal Navy and command of the Roebuck to conduct surveys of New Holland (Australia)… Dampier’s accounts show him to have been a careful observer of everything affecting navigation and of the natural history of the lands he visited. His style is clear and simple, making his writings almost classical. A precursor of the eighteenth century, he was not interested in marvels but in examination and description of natural phenomena. Through his writings, Dampier made the profitable possibilities of the Pacific known » (Hill).

Grand navigateur avant Cook, mais aussi négociant et flibustier, William Dampier (1651-1715) effectua deux voyages autour du monde de 1673 à 1691 et de 1699 à 1701. Il découvrit plusieurs îles des mers du Sud et laissa son nom à un archipel de la Papouasie. Il est le premier anglais à avoir foulé le sol de la Nouvelle Hollande en janvier 1688, soit exactement un siècle avant que le gouverneur Philipp accoste sur le même continent et fonde la première colonie anglaise qui deviendra l’Australie.

Reliure du 1er volume légèrement différente. Quelques accrocs aux coiffes et départs de fentes aux mors. Rares et légères rousseurs. Petites déchirures marginales (une avec manque, une à une figure sans manque) à quelques feuillets, sans gravité. Manque un frontispice.
