Jeune artiste nigérian né en 1997 à Lagos, Olamilekan Abatan découvre très tôt le dessin et s’oriente vers une carrière artistique deux ans après l’obtention de son diplôme en arts visuels à l’Agidingbi Technical College de Lagos. Son travail hyperréaliste se distingue par l’usage combiné de tissus traditionnels africains, de charbon et de fusain. Au cœur de sa démarche, l’émancipation et la valorisation de la culture africaine, notamment à travers l’intégration du textile africain dans ses compositions. Abatan revisite les chefs-d’œuvre des grands maîtres et réinscrit la figure de l’homme africain au sein de l’histoire de l’art, mêlant références classiques, techniques ancrées dans la modernité africaine et codes de la mode contemporaine.

Dans Bacchus (2025), l’artiste croise motifs antiques et éléments contemporains : la figure de Bacchus prend les traits d’un jeune homme africain, torse nu et lumineux, le bras levé tenant un verre de vin et une grappe de raisins, en écho aux représentations du dieu romain. Le jean, les baskets et la coupe afro associée à la couronne de pampre actualisent le mythe, tandis qu’une chaîne en or dialogue avec les attributs traditionnels de Bacchus. La composition joue sur une double profondeur grâce à un papier peint en tissu wax ; le fauteuil-lit orné de motifs de roses, sur lequel le personnage s’abandonne, contraste avec le fusain qui modèle sa peau. Fasciné par les jeux de lumière, Abatan cultive le contraste comme marque de fabrique. Le regard du personnage, à la fois ancré dans le présent et teinté d’antique, confère à l’œuvre une majesté épurée et une dimension résolument intemporelle.

A young Nigerian artist born in Lagos in 1997, Olamilekan Abatan discovered drawing at an early age and began his artistic career two years after graduating with a degree in visual arts from Agidingbi Technical College in Lagos. His hyperrealistic work stands out for its combined use of traditional African textiles, charcoal, and carbon. At the core of his practice is the emancipation and celebration of African culture, expressed in particular through the integration of African fabrics into his compositions. Abatan revisits the masterpieces of the great masters, reinscribing the figure of the African man into art history by merging classical references, techniques rooted in African modernity, and contemporary fashion codes.

In Bacchus (2025), the artist blends ancient motifs with contemporary elements: the figure of Bacchus assumes the features of a young African man, bare-chested and radiant, his arm raised as he holds a glass of wine and a cluster of grapes, echoing traditional representations of the Roman god. Jeans, sneakers, and an Afro hairstyle paired with a crown of vine leaves bring the myth into the present, while a gold chain interacts with Bacchus’s traditional attributes. The composition creates a sense of dual depth through a wax-print wallpaper; the rose-patterned armchair-bed on which the figure reclines contrasts with the charcoal that shapes his skin. Fascinated by the play of light, Abatan cultivates contrast as his signature. The figure’s gaze—both anchored in the present and tinged with antiquity—lends the work a refined majesty and a truly timeless dimension.
