Le monde intérieur de Peterson est un monde de chaos total où la violence règne en maître et semble régir l'ensemble des relations individuelles et sociales. Décrit par le biais d'une palette chromatique réduite à quelques dominantes récurrentes (noir, rouge et blanc), ce monde de violence extrême vient en quelque sorte démentir la théorie hobbesienne selon laquelle "à l'état de nature l'homme est un loup pour l'homme, à l'état social l'homme est un dieu pour l'homme". Car si l'homme tel que nous le décrit Peterson est bel est bien prédateur pour son alter ego, c'est pourtant bien de l'homme du XXIème siècle dont il s'agit. L'homme moderne donc, voire post-moderne, et réputé hautement civilisé...

Visiblement sous-tendues par une philosophie résolument pessimiste, les scènes de violence extrême peintes par Peterson ont cette particularité de ne pas opposer victimes et bourreaux, innocents et coupables. Conçues de manière très narrative et contant toujours la même histoire - celle de la prédation universelle -, elles décrivent chaque protagoniste, de l'homme en uniforme à la femme aux vêtements arrachés, comme mû par une aversion sans limite envers son prochain, les traits figés dans un rictus de haine et de douleur commun à tous.

Peterson's inner world is one of total chaos, where violence reigns supreme and seems to govern all individual and social relationships. Depicted through a chromatic palette reduced to a few recurring dominants (black, red and white), this world of extreme violence belies the Hobbesian theory that “in the state of nature, man is a wolf to man; in the social state, man is a god to man”. For if man as Peterson describes him is indeed a predator for his alter ego, it's the man of the 21st century we're talking about. Modern man, even post-modern man, reputed to be highly civilized...

Clearly underpinned by a resolutely pessimistic philosophy, Peterson's scenes of extreme violence have the distinctive feature of not opposing victims and executioners, innocent and guilty. Conceived in a highly narrative manner and always telling the same story - that of universal predation - they depict each protagonist, from the man in uniform to the woman with her clothes torn off, as driven by an unbounded aversion to his fellow man, his features frozen in a rictus of hatred and pain common to all.
