De 1994 à 1996 , Rong Rong a vécu dans une communauté d'artistes de la périphérie de Pékin dans un quartier insalubre mais aux loyers modiques que l'on a appelé " l'East Village ". Il y avait là des artistes marginaux, notamment des artistes de performance, comme Ma Liuming, Zhang Huan ou Zhu Ming .
Les clichés de Rong Rong sur les performances réalisées à cette époque sont parfois les seuls documents qui restent pour témoigner et documenter ces événements artistiques, photos superbes, très contrastées, subtiles, au grain parfait.
