In the eyes of the world’s connoisseurs and collectors of photographs, France is considered the international focal point of meetings and exchanges, as demonstrated by the undeniable success of the many events dedicated to photography - such as Paris Photo and Les Rencontres d’Arles.
It is only natural, therefore, that Artcurial should organise several auctions per year, with sales including everything from early Daguerreotypes to contemporary photographs, as well as specific sales dedicated to works by a single artist or either private single owner collections. Recently, the Photography Department has cemented its reputation through its ability to bring to market important private collections, offering a fascinating overview of the history of photography in the 2nd half of the XXth century; such sales have included Items From the Willy Ronis Succession, The Stéphane Kovalsky Collection, the single artist auction dedicated to André Kertész and the Pierre Molinier Auction - Emmanuelle Arsan Collection.
On 25th October, Artcurial will be auctioning the unpublished collection of Robert William Burke (1948-2020), an American collector and gallery owner who was closely associated with Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly and Gilbert & George. His friendships and his taste for art gave rise to a collection of close to 300 works spanning several centuries of art history.
On 27 & 28 june, Artcurial paid tribute to the photographic work of Dora Maar with some 750 photos presented with nearly 350 lots. The majority of these photographs are unpublished, including personal images taken during the years she spent with Pablo Picasso.
On 15th December, Artcurial honoured photography with 200 exceptional photographs by the artist Willy Ronis, from the collection of his grandson Stéphane Kovalsky. Emblematic or more intimate photographs that retrace the career of the famous photographer.
