A pioneer in this speciality, Artcurial organised the first sale dedicated to contemporary African art in Paris in 2010, with 65 artists representing 24 nationalities.
In 2017, Artcurial held a contemporary African art sale entitled African Spirit as part of its auctions in Marrakech, making the most of the city’s dynamism to attract international collectors. Further auctions in 2018 enabled the department to set 12 world records in two years for artists such as Bodys Isek Kingelez, Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta. Since 2019, Artcurial has been organising up to two sales per year at La Mamounia in Marrakech, with the aim of presenting quality works by renowned artists and new talents.
In 2018, Artcurial launched Marrakech Art Week which was held two years in a row in the city: a true cultural hub for the promotion and development of the African art scene.
In parallel, the department continues to develop in Paris by organising bi-annual live sales as well as online auctions, allowing this increasingly popular art form to be introduced to art lovers and collectors.

From February 27th to March 5th, 2024, Artcurial's Contemporary African Art department, in partnership with Gallery OOA, will be exhibiting eighteen portraits by artist Marion Boehm, including her latest works produced in 2023. This varied ensemble traces her various artistic explorations around nomadism, femininity and the diversity of African identities, and pays tribute to her unique and committed oeuvre. All portraits will be available for purchase at the exhibition.
Following the success of the Moroccan & African Spirit sale of November, Artcurial was back at La Mamounia on 30th December 2023 for the 5th edition of A Moroccan Winter, Majorelle & his Contemporaries and Moroccan & African Spirit sale.
On 4th November 2023, at La Mamounia, Artcurial presented great names of modern and contemporary Moroccan and African art from a prestigious Moroccan collections. This sale featured artworks by Melehi, Gharbaoui, Rabi', Labied, Ben Cheffaj, Soly Cissé and Abdoulaye Konaté.
The 4th edition of A Moroccan Wintertook place on 30th December 2022 at La Mamounia. Jacques Majorelle was the guest of honour at this prestigious session on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his passing, with a group of exceptional and unpublished works for sale.
On 26th October 2022, Artcurial presented a completely new auction, entitled Generation 21 by Artcurial focusing on the 21st century. It encompasses the current contemporary art scene and its various niches, such as urban art and contemporary African art, which Artcurial has been successfully developing over the past few years.
On May 31st, the Contemporary African Art department presented a set of works that pay tribute to the female model. Numerous artists from the African contemporary scene were also highlighted, such as Godwin Champs Namuyimba, Omar Ba, Barthélémy Toguo, Aboudia, Joseph Ntensibe, Jordan Tchoffo, and Peter Ngugi.
The 5th edition of the A Morrocan Winter sale, which was held on Thursday 30th December 2021 at La Mamounia, Marrakech, was a great success, totalling €5.15m.
On 30th December, Artcurial Morocco held its prestigious sales A Moroccan Winter at LaMamounia, Marrakech, with broadcast in Paris. This auctions highlighted : Majorelle & his Contemporaries, Modern & Contemporary Art as well as Contemporary African Art.
