From Italy to France, a European Passion

From Italy to France, a European Passion

Prior to the dedicated auction that will take place in Paris on 9th June, a selection of works from the collection From Italy to France, a European Passion will be exhibited for the first time in Brussels.

From 5th to 7th May, discover a preview of this collection which highlights French artists who lived and worked in Italy: Joseph Vernet, Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre, Charles-Joseph Natoire, Jacques Stella and Joseph-Marie Vien.

This exhibition, in all its diversity, highlights the Northern schools with a selection of very high quality paintings. First up is the impressive Christ with the Instruments of the Passion by Maerten van Heemskerck, a true manifesto of Mannerism with its exaggeration of line and modernity of colour.  Sebastian Vrancx's lively village scene illustrates the theme of everyday life in the countryside, so dear to Flemish painters in the tradition of Brueghel, and so popular with art lovers. Frans Snyders' Two monkeys by a fruit basket testifies to the liveliness of the Flemish still-life, as practised in the wake of Rubens' studio, whilst the exceptional composition by Jan Jansz. van de Velde III demonstrates the Dutch side of this pictorial genre through its sobriety and precision. Finally, there is a rare painting by Adam de Coster, a representative of Northern Caravaggism, in which the beholder is seized by the intense gaze of an old man, lit by the flame of a candle.

From May 12th to June 4th, Artcurial invites you to discover in Brussels a selection of works from the upcoming Contemporary African Art sale. Gathered under the theme of the Portrait, these works will highlight the many ways in which artists from the continent are redefining this medium in order to reflect the concerns of younger generations around the world. These artists, rarely exhibited in Belgium, who live and work in Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa or Zimbabwe, are emerging figures in the African contemporary art market. The cosmopolitan African identity, open to the world, is reflected in the works of these artists.
