Orientalist Paintings

Only two years after its creation in 2008, the Orientalist Painting Department, directed by Olivier Berman, became the front-runner in continental Europe with more than 25 world-records to its name. It is also the leading name regarding Jacques Majorelle, claiming all 11 highest bids for the artist since 2011.

The excellent results obtained are entirely due to the team’s expertise, a rigorous selection and innovative choice by initiating thematic sales and traveling exhibitions.

The 2011 exhibition, « Jacques Majorelle et ses contemporains » in Marrakech at the Palace Es Saadi, in 2012« Jacques Majorelle et ses contemporain II », and in 2013 « Regard sur la Tunisie », in 2014 "Moroccan spirit, 140 years of creation in Morocco", pre-exhibition to the Villa des Arts in Casablanca in 2015" Regards sur l’Algerie," and "African Spirit", pre-exhibition at the Palace Es Saadi in Marrakech are all important dates in North African themed art. This same year, Artcurial also disperses the collection " A Moroccan Passion, Pierre Bergé & Yves Saint Laurent collection " at the Palace Es Saadi in Marrakech.

Since 2014, the department has also developed two new sectors, namely Africanism, with artists including Quinquaud, Iacovleff, Ackein and Majorelle and Modern Arabic Art with artists including Gharbaoui, Cherkaoui, BelKahia, Mokhtar, Abboud and Saïd. The department has established significant prices for a pour Jilali Gharbaoui who obtained €91,000 for an oil on canvas in June 2010, and a bronze « Au bord du Nil » by Mahmoud Mokhtar for €232,200 in December 2016.

The incredible results generated in the past years have generated an increased demand for artists such as Dinet, Majorelle, Girardet, Ernst, Roubtzoff, Boutet de Monvel, Benjamin Constant, Deutsch, Pasini and Ziem, as well as for more contemporary artists.

In 2016, Olivier Berman organises the first duplex auction between Paris and Marrakech, Paris#Marrakech including two big chapters: the third edition of the “Jacques Majorelle et ses contemporains” series, and a selection of Arab and International Modern and Contemporary Art selection.

The second edition of the Paris#Marrakech auction took place on December 30th , 2017 and presented for the first time a section dedicated to contemporary African art. The 7 new world records and a result of more than 3.5 million euros have confirmed the interest for this important meeting of the end of the year in Paris and Marrakech.

These auctions have been lauded by international client base, or 80% of foreign buyers composed of large collectors, museum institutes and foundations.
