The Penitent Magdalene by Salaì reaches €1.7M
 

The prestigious Old Master & 19th Century Art auction organised on Wednesday 18th November 2020 totals €5,694,300, well above its estimate, with 10 lots sold above €100,000 including A Fishing Boat by Jean-François Millet at €505,000 and Why born enslaved? by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux at €306,600.

 

Dominating the auction, the Penitent Magdalene by Salaì took reached €1,745,000 after a long bidding battle that you can watch on video. This artwork sets a new world record for an artwork by the artist sold at auction. Identified by art historians, this oil on panel joins the corpus of the very few works perfectly recognized as being made by him, strongly impregnated with the technique of the master Leonardo da Vinci with whom he worked.
