Modern & Contemporary Art: an exclusive selection

On 8th and 9th June, the major prestige sales of Modern & Contemporary Art will take place at Artcurial, bringing together an exclusive selection of over 400 works. These sales will honour the artwork of emblematic painters and sculptors who have left their mark on the last two centuries.

Modern Art
The Impressionist & Modern Art department will hold its prestigious sale featuring major works of art by key artists from the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The Evening Sale on Wednesday 8th June at 8pm will feature a selection of nearly thirty works from private collections. The following day, at 11am, 45 works by the Franco-Chinese painter Sanyu from the Jean-Claude Riedel Collection will be auctioned, followed by the Day Sale at 2pm, which will feature nearly 140 paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Both the Evening and Day Sales bring together some remarkable works by such artists as Camille Pissarro, Maurice Denis, Maurice Utrillo, Rembrandt Bugatti and Maurice de Vlaminck. Bernard Buffet will also feature with an exceptional Clown on a red background from 1961, estimated at €400,000–600,000. However, the major highlights of the sale will be a group of 11 original works by Paul Gauguin, comprising paintings, sculptures, ceramics and drawings and an exceptional still life by Vincent Van Gogh entitled Still Life, coffee pot and two white bowls from 1885, a study for the famous painting The Potato Eaters estimated at €250,000–350,000.

The sale of the third part of the Jean-Claude Riedel Collection will honour the famous Franco-Chinese calligrapher, Sanyu, with 45 drawings of nudes, women’s faces and portraits of women artists, all of which will take place in an endless dance between ink and paper.

“This new selection of Impressionist and Modern works, for the most part new to the market, spans a wide range of styles, movements and creations by the principal artists at the heart of the French scene from the late 19th century through to the end of the Second World War. I hope that collectors will share in our excitement in discovering some real gems.”

Contemporary Art

The Post-War and Contemporary Art department will present around 220 lots for sale in its two prestige auctions. The Evening Sale on Wednesday 8th June will highlight the artwork of several leading artists of recent decades, including Richard Serra, with his characteristically sculptor-like work entitled Hollywood Lawn from 1989, estimated at €550,000-850,000, as well as a magnificent oil on canvas from 1969 by Joan Mitchell, which offers a glimpse of the American artist's quintessential vocabulary, estimated at €600,000-800,000.
Other works by iconic contemporary artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Georges Mathieu, César and Zao Wou-Ki will complete this rich selection.

The Day Sale will present a wider selection of contemporary artworks, including works by Maurice Estève, Robert Combas, Jacques Monory and an exceptional set by Berto Lardera. The Berto Lardera Collection includes 16 sculptures and 14 collages by the artist. Considered one of the masters of sculpture of the second half of the 20th century, this set highlights the evolution of his career as a sculptor, his thinking and the development of his style between 1942 and 1980. The sculptures, made of different materials, vary in size, with the tallest reaching 2.52 metres. The collages, dating from 1954 to 1979, are a privileged means of expression for the artist.
