Exhibition in Monaco
of Impressionist & Modern Works on Paper

As a preview of the Impressionist & Modern sales, the Artcurial Monaco office is hosting, from 25th May to 19th June, a selection of works on paper by the great modern masters of the 20th century that will be put on sale on 8th and 9th July in Paris. This selection displays the full range of expression associated with works in pastel, watercolour, ink wash and gouache on treated paper, as works in their own right that are lyrical and spontaneous.

The standout pieces include a large gouache from 1935 by Marc Chagall, a vividly-coloured celebration of a couple with a bouquet and an autobiographical testimony to the artist’s love affair with his wife Bella (estimate €180,000 - 250,000); a superb pastel by Kees van Dongen from 1907, Portrait de Fernande Olivier (estimate €100,000 - 150,000), a rare historic work from the artist’s Fauvist period that vividly captures the features of Picasso’s muse and model during his Montmartre period; another historic work, the large watercolour by Francis Picabia, Espagnole, from around 1922 (estimate €50,000 - 70,000), which appeared in the famous “Quatre-vingts Picabia de Marcel Duchamp” sale on 8 March 1926, and which has been shown in every international retrospective dedicated to the artist; by Pablo Picasso, a large ink wash painting on Japanese paper from 1960, Scène villageoise (estimate €150,000 - 200,000), with a picaresque feel in which the Spanish master’s virtuosity is apparent; and lastly, the master of colour, Raoul Dufy, appears here with two large works in gouache and watercolour on two of his favourite subjects: Bateaux dans le bassin de Deauville (estimate €60,000 - 80,000) and Une scène de Paddock (estimate €80,000 - 120,000).

This selection will later be exhibited in Paris from 4 July in the Artcurial show rooms with over 200 other Impressionist and Modern works from several major private collections.
