Artcurial and Primitive Art

Artcurial and Lempertz, the premier German auction house, have announced a partnership around Primitive Art. From now on they will be holding joint auctions for this speciality, enabling international collectors to benefit from unparalleled expertise in this area of the art market.

Historically, the Belgian capital is a major centre for Tribal Art; Lempertz has been organising sales of African and Oceanic Art in the city for several decades and Artcurial opened a very active office there in 2012.

It has always been the aim of Artcurial to be able to offer clients the widest possible spectrum of specialities on the art market. This new collaboration in the field of Tribal Art will enable Artcurial to strengthen its presence in Belgium, through the organisation of joint auctions. Appraisal days will be held regularly in Paris and in Brussels.

To launch this new partnership, Artcurial is displaying a selection of pieces of Melanesian art from the collection entitled ‘A Sculptor’s Eye’. This rare private collection will be auctioned by Lempertz in Brussels on October 24th 2018.

Put together over several decades, the collection includes some beautiful pieces of Melanesian art, with notably Sepik statuettes and masks, Kap Kaps and jewellery. Several lots stand out due to their prestigious provenance, for example coming from the collections of Carl Otto Czeschka, an artist of the Vienna Secession movement and a key member of the Wiener Werkstätte, and of Julien Konietzko, the Hamburg art dealer.
