The department, one of the leaders on the market, has been focusing on the most prestigious French and international wines and spirits for several years now, whether these are for drinking, laying down or investment.
The team, which is led by experts Laurie Matheson and Luc Dabadie, assisted by Marie Calzada – junior specialist graduated from WSET, has earned worldwide recognition for its expertise and for presenting only the finest wines and spirits.
International buyers are increasingly contributing to the success of our sessions, appreciating the quality and the irreproachable provenance of the lots, most of which come from private cellars.
Honouring its commitment to provide collectors with something special, the wine department regularly offers incredible private collections. Appraising these is the true know-how of the team and has enabled Artcurial to achieve remarkable prices, such as a single bottle of Romanée Conti selling for €16,100, a magnum of Pétrus 2000 selling for € 8,700, and a bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild 1945 which fetched €8,200 against an estimate of 6,500 - 7,000 Euros in June 2017.
During the sales, wine lovers and collectors from the world over can discover the department’s selections of wines, champagnes and exclusive spirits from the most sought after estates such as Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Haut Brion, Pétrus, d’Yquem from Bordeau; Romanée Conti, Henri Jayer, De Vögué, Méo Camuzet, Trapet, Ponsot, Ligier Bel Air, Clos des Lambrays, Leflaive, Coche Dury, Raveneau and Dauvissat from Burgundy; Château Rayas, Hermitage la Chapelle, Domaine de la Mordorée, Jamet, Cuilleron and Rostaing from the Vallée du Rhone and champagnes such as Jaques Selosse, Jacqeusson, Krug Clos du Mesnil, Cristal Roederer and Dom Perignon, to name but a few. In each case a particular attention is paid to provenance and the quality of storage.
The department organises 6 auctions bringing together 1,200 lots. The team also work with partners on the organisation of charity sales, such as La Part des Anges which took place in Cognac in the autumn of 2016.
To begin the year, we wanted to share some information on biodynamic and organic wines, for many of the best of such wines are already in our auction catalogues. They will become more and more numerous in the future as certifications are acquired, which is a yearly occurrence.
The year 2020 was notably marked by a number of records and millionaire auctions, such as an important stabile by Alexander Calder sold for €4.9M and the masterpiece the Penitent Magdalene by Salaì, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, which sold for €1.7M. Find out more in our video…
All of us are looking forward to sharing the coziness and good food of the festive season, which is also an opportunity to enjoy fine wines and spirits. The Fine Wines & Spirits auction on 15 and 17 December offers a chance to indulge yourself, give beautiful gifts or invest in wines to be kept for ageing. Wine expert Laurie Matheson lets us in on her secrets for the best food-wine pairings.
