Created in 2002, the Design department has imposed itself in a highly dynamic and competitive sector, 20th century and millennial creators of domestic landscapes and exceptional furniture are brought to attention.
Currently leader in the Design international market, the department has acquired expertise and recognised proficiency thanks to thematic sales such as Light is more: a historic sale devoted to Ingo Maurer luminaires - Black, the black in domestic landscapes: first cross-sectional sale highlighting design, contemporary art and photography -Chandigarh project: unique Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier furniture sale created for the legendary Punjabi capital - Al Dente!: a sale comprising design, contemporary art, photography and Italians jewellery - Modern Design For Living, around Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret - Artcurial organises Swiss Made in 2009 around Swiss graphics and furniture. Recently, collectors extolled the sale dedicated to Ron Arad, or Heavy Metal, exceptional pieces gathered around a metal theme in 2016.
Since 2014, the department brilliantly reasserts its leading position and continues to establish numerous world records at auction, of which the world record for a piece of Jean Prouvé furniture reached at auction, in May 2014, the Trapeze Table earning €1.2M including fees, or the world record for a Marc Newson work at the auction, Pod of drawers, sold €1M in October 2016.
Since May 2015, Artcurial has also created an auction exclusively dedicated to Scandinavian design history, supporting this market development, the increasing number of collectors having expressly demonstrated a growing enthusiasm for this specialty. Under the leadership of consultant Aldric Speer, passionate and avid collector, this latest offering suggests a complete spectrum of this field. The success was instantaneous. As early as the first auction, a Model FJ49 aka Chieftain seat by Finn Juhl, reaches a record price of €262,000 including fees.
Today the department hosts four annual sales, alternating prestigious and mid-season auctions, offering an initiation to the field to all types of collectors, and including special collection auctions.
On Monday, the 23rd of May, the Art Deco / Design department will present two sets coming from prestigious commissions: Jean Prouvé for Pierre Bindschedler and Jean Royère for an original private collection.
On 31 May, the Art Deco/Design department organised a sale dedicated to major Art Deco and Design artists such as Pierre Chareau, Eckart Muthesius, Josef Hoffmann & Wiener Werkstätte, François Pompon, Jean Prouvé, Claude et François-Xavier Lalanne, Jean Dunand, René Lalique, Raphaël Delorme, Charlotte Perriand, Claude Parent, Paul Evans, Jean-Pierre Vitrac, Michel Boyer, Louis Durot, Ron Arad, Ingrid Donat or even Hubert le Gall. The sale featured exceptional artworks ranging from Art Nouveau to Contemporary Design.
The Kenzo Takada Creations auction, which took place from 3rd to 12th May 2021, featured kimonos, boleros and coats by the fashion icon. These unique pieces, which reflected a subtle balance between East and West, were a major success with 100% of the lots sold.
