Created in 2002, the Design department has imposed itself in a highly dynamic and competitive sector, 20th century and millennial creators of domestic landscapes and exceptional furniture are brought to attention.
Currently leader in the Design international market, the department has acquired expertise and recognised proficiency thanks to thematic sales such as Light is more: a historic sale devoted to Ingo Maurer luminaires - Black, the black in domestic landscapes: first cross-sectional sale highlighting design, contemporary art and photography -Chandigarh project: unique Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier furniture sale created for the legendary Punjabi capital - Al Dente! : a sale comprising design, contemporary art, photography and Italians jewellery - Modern Design For Living, around Jean Prové, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret - Artcurial organises Swiss Made in 2009 around Swiss graphics and furniture. Recently, collectors extolled the sale dedicated to Ron Arad, or Heavy Metal, exceptional pieces gathered around a metal theme in 2016.
Since 2014, the department brilliantly reasserts its leading position and continues to establish numerous world records at auction, of which the world record for a piece of Jean Prouvé furniture reached at auction, in May2014, the trapeze Table earning €1.2 M including fees, or the world record for a Marc Newson work at the auction, Pod of drawers, sold 1 M€ in October 2016.
Since May 2015, Artcurial has also created an auction exclusively dedicated to Scandinavian design history, supporting this market development, the increasing number of collectors having expressly demonstrated a growing enthusiasm for this specialty. Under the leadership of consultant Aldric Speer, passionate and avid collector, this latest offering suggests a complete spectrum of this field. The success was instantaneous. As early as the first auction, a Mode, FJ49 aka chieftain seat by Finn Juhl, reaches a record price of €262,000 including fees.
Today the department hosts four annual sales, alternating prestigious and mid-season auctions, offering an initiation to the field to all types of collectors, and including special collection auctions.
A monumental stabile by Alexander Calder, the extraordinary chairs made for the comte d’Artois at the château de Bagatelle, an important 10.42 ct emerald-cut diamond ring, the intriguing collection of old master paintings that belonged to Baron François Empain, a rare Spirou cover by André Franquin, a superb private collection of watches in which Rolex and Patek Philippe took pride of place, a summer sale of collector cars in Monte-Carlo… the past semester included many remarkably successful sales.
We thank you for your support and trust, which allowed us to achieve these extraordinary results, and look forward to seeing you again from 9th September for a new sales season that promises many exciting discoveries and surprises.
