Since 2013, under the impulsion of François Tajan, Artcurial has tirelessly endeavoured to develop the collector watch sector, experiencing several years of strong growth and increased international interest.
Directed by Marie Sanna-Legrand and assisted by Justine Lamarre, the Watches Department organises four sales per year in Paris and Monaco. Together with Geoffroy Ader, watch expert, the team offers the finest sales strategy for the most successful results.
In 2016, the department achieved more than 4,5 million euros in sales, a 60% growth, which becomes the highest yearly result ever for the department. Since 2015, Artcurial concentrates its Luxury auctions in Monaco, organising two auction sessions per year (January and July) around departments such as Jewellery, Collector’s Timepieces and Vintage Hermès, making the Principality the essential hub for collectors from around the world.
Managing the division's auction sales for more than 20 years, Marie Sanna-Legrand was the long time colleague of auctioneer Francis Briest. She participated namely in the organisation and dispersal of large private collections, such as the Olga Carré Collection in 2003 (€20,78 M / $20.57 M including 3 millionaire lots), the Alice Tériade Collection in October 2007 (€10 M / $14.1 M, 100% of the lots sold, lowest estimate multiplied by 5) and the Gérard Oury Collection in April 2009, which included an important set of works by Raoul Dufy. With a strong passion for the watchmaking industry, she becomes head of the department in 2013. Under her aegis, the branch has seen its results progress in a significant manner and break numerous records. She has also instigated itinerant timepiece exhibitions in Monaco, Geneva and Milan, as well as the events in connection with the thematic “Panerai Only” auction, which was held on 8th December 2014.
Born into a long line of French auctioneers, Geoffroy Ader began his career as a watch specialist in 1995 at Drouot, before leaving for the Geneva auction house Antiquorum. In 2005, he joins Tajan as Watch Department Director in charge of sales in Paris and Monaco.
Geoffrey Ader was appointed European Director of the Luxury Watch department for Sotheby’s in Geneva, where he initiated the first evening sale of its kind in May 2008. Throughout his career, he has dispersed a number of exceptional timepieces: the Patek Philippe “Trossi Leggenda” that belonged to Count Trossi, the first Scuderia Ferrari manager and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer’s personal Rolex.
In search of new challenges, Geoffroy Ader re-joins Antiquorum in 2015 as head of the digital sector. He is at the origin of their first e-commerce watch platform, Antiquorum Watch Boutique, which he developed to turn his attention to a new generation of Internet collectors.
His entrepreneurial and international profile attracted the attention of Artcurial, with whom he will share his 20 years of experience, becoming the new expert in collector watches exclusive to the auction house.
