Marque exclusive, sinon confidentielle, née du désir de quelques gentlemen amateurs de vitesse désireux d'avoir des automobiles " différentes ", Invicta produisit des voitures sur mesures dotées d'un moteur suffisamment puissant à bas régime pour ne plus avoir besoin de la boîte de vitesses afin de se concentrer sur le pilotage. Ces gentlemen passionnés, plus assembleurs que constructeurs, sortirent leur première Invicta en 1925 après s'être brièvement intéressés à la vapeur ! Equipée d'un moteur à soupapes en tête Meadows de 2,5 litres, l'Invicta acquit vite la réputation d'une voiture assez rapide, précise et stable (selon les critères de l'époque), bien finie et bien équipée, mais coupable de deux défauts : un poids excessif dû à la qualité et à la robustesse de ses composants provenant tous de fournisseurs extérieurs spécialisés, et un prix qui la réservait à la jeunesse dorée en la situant juste au-dessous des Bentley sans toutefois en offrir le même niveau de performance. Inutile de préciser que chaque voiture était construite sur mesures et que chaque client venait à l'atelier donner ses instructions ou les modifier le cas échéant. Les torpédos 2,5 litres plafonnaient à 100 km/h avec 75 ch à 3 500 tr/min, mais comme prévu, la boîte de vitesses ne servait qu'à démarrer.

En 1926, la version trois litres tenta de résoudre le premier problème en apportant un supplément de couple bienvenu. Avec un rapport final court, ces voitures d'environ 1,8 tonne, même les torpédos, accéléraient brillamment. Mais face à la concurrence, il fallut offrir davantage et en 1928, Invicta proposa le moteur Meadows de 4,5 litres développé conjointement par la marque et son fournisseur, un groupe solide comme un roc qui n'innovait pas : soupapes en tête à culbuteurs, vilebrequin sur quatre paliers, double allumage et deux carburateurs. Ce moteur construit avec un soin extrême et avec les meilleurs matériaux de l'époque était cher, mais robuste et endurant. (Il équipera même des camions et des chars d'assaut dans les années 1930.)
En 1928, avec 110 ou 115 ch, l'Invicta 4,5 litres atteignait 145 km/h en prise directe, mais montait à 120 en troisième. Les sportifs y trouvaient enfin leur compte et leurs vœux seront comblés en 1930 quand Invicta sortit son châssis surbaissé, le type LS (low slung) qui devint du jour au lendemain l'archétype de la voiture de sport britannique au même titre que les Mercedes-Benz types S et SS pour l'Allemagne. Les deux tuyaux d'échappement chromés qui jaillissaient du capot riveté comme celui des Rolls-Royce contribuèrent aussi à suggérer cette comparaison.

Plus basse que les Bentley grâce à des longerons de châssis passant sous le pont arrière, au positionnement des ressorts arrière, longs et plats placés à l'extérieur des longerons, à un auvent réduit en hauteur et à une direction très inclinée, la silhouette de l'Invicta LS, dont les ailes avant étaient pratiquement à la hauteur du long capot, suggérait immanquablement la vitesse. Aux mains de pilotes aguerris - un accident à Brooklands aux mains d'un pilote journaliste lui valut une injuste réputation de voiture dangereuse exploitée par la concurrence - l'Invicta 4,5 litres fut engagée dans des épreuves sérieuses. Fini les records fantaisistes genre Londres-Monte Carlo en prise directe : Invicta ou plutôt ses clients attaquèrent à Brooklands (les Double Twelve 1930), à la Coupe des Alpes (trois LS non pénalisées en 1932) ou à la côte de Shelley Walsh (nouveau record de catégorie Sport en 1932 avec Raymond Mays, père des ERA). Les Invicta coururent le Mannin Moar sur l'île de Man et le TT irlandais en 1933 quoique sans résultat. Le succès historique sera signé en 1931 au Rallye de Monte Carlo par Donald Healey qui prendra aussi la deuxième place absolue en 1932 et la deuxième de sa catégorie au Rallye du RAC 1933. Quant au moteur Meadows, la preuve de sa belle santé sera donnée aux 24 Heures du Mans 1935 grâce à la victoire de la Lagonda.
Les Invicta LS ne furent produites, selon les sources qu'à 52 ou 77 exemplaires et toujours livrées en châssis nus, mais certaines d'entre elles ne furent assemblées qu'après la première faillite de la marque déclarée en 1933. Quoi qu'il en soit, si l'adjectif " exclusive " peut s'appliquer à une automobile, l'Invicta le mérite amplement.

La voiture présentée est un rare, sinon unique coupé deux places (+ 2 symboliques) aux mains du même propriétaire français depuis 1972. Son immatriculation britannique était auparavant GO 6422, comme le montre un vieux papier retrouvé au fond de la boite à gants. La copie de la carte grise du propriétaire précedent nous montre que la voiture appartenait à un certain robert McLaren, domicilié à Paris au 112 Boulevard Saint-Germain. Il est intéressant de noter que l'immatriculation précédente est ES 40 07. Cette impressionnante Invicta Sport surbaissée à carrosserie fermée (pare-brise ouvrant), produite à quelques exemplaires, est unique en France. Noire avec intérieur en pécari havane et moquettes vert passepoilées havane, elle se présente en très bon état général et prête à prendre la route accompagnée de sa carte grise française normale. C'est une occasion unique d'acquérir une grande sportive britannique de la fin de la période Vintage.

Extremely exclusive brand, born of the desire of certain gentlemen, lovers of speed, to have "different" cars. Invicta produced custom built cars equipped with an engine that was sufficiently powerful at a low gear not to need a gear box so as to concentrate on driving. These passionate gentlemen, more assemblers than builders, brought out their first Invicta in 1925 after having briefly been interested in steam! Equipped with a Meadows 2.5 litre overhead valve engine, the Invicta quickly acquired the reputation of a fairly fast, precise and stable car (according to the criteria of the time), well finished and well equipped, but guilty of two defects: excessive weight due to the quality and the robust nature of its components coming from all the specialised external suppliers, and a price which kept it to the golden youth, placing it just beneath Bentleys without, however, providing their level of performance. Needless to say, each car was custom built and each client came to the workshop to give or modify his instructions. The 2.5 litre torpedoes were limited to 100 km/h with 75 hp at 3,500 rpm, but as intended, the gearbox was only good for starting the car.

In 1926 the three litre version tried to resolve the first problem by giving a welcome increase in torque. With a short final ratio, these cars of around 1.8 tonnes, even the torpedoes, accelerated brilliantly. But, faced with the competition, they needed to offer more and in 1928, Invicta brought out the 4.5 litre Meadows developed together by the brand and its supplier, a group as solid as a rock, which did not innovate: overhead valves with cam followers, crankshaft on four bearings, double ignition and two carburettors. This engine built with extreme care and with the best materials at the time was expensive, but robust and hardwearing (it even equipped lorries and tanks in the 1930s).
In 1928, with 110 or 115 hp, the Invicta 4.5 litre reached 145 km/h in direct drive, but reached 120 in third. Sportsmen finally found what they were looking for and their wishes were fulfilled in 1930 when Invicta brought out its low-frame chassis, LS type (low slung) which became the archetype of a British sports car overnight just like the Mercedes-Benz S and SS types for Germany. The two chrome exhaust pipes which emerged from the riveted bonnet as on a Rolls-Royce also lend weight to this comparison.

Lower than Bentleys thanks to chassis sills which passed beneath the rear axle, to the positioning of the rear springs, which were long and flat and placed outside the sills, to a roof reduced in height and at a very sloping angle, the silhouette of the Invicta LS, whose front wings were practically at the level of the long bonnet, inevitably suggested speed. In the hands of seasoned drivers - an accident at Brooklands in the hands of a journalist driver gave it an unfair reputation as a dangerous car exploited by competition - the 4.5 litre Invicta was used in serious races. Done with farfetched records such as London-Monte Carlo in direct drive, Invicta, or rather its clients, attacked Brooklands (the Double Twelve 1930), the Alps Cup (three non-penalised LS in 1932) or the Shelley Walsh hill (a new Sports category record in 1932 with Raymond Mays, father of English Racing Automobiles, or ERA). The Invictas ran the Mannin Moar on the Isle of Man and the Irish TT (Tourist Trophy) although without an outcome. The historic success was signed in 1931 at the Monte Carlo Rally by Donald Healey who also took overall second place in 1932 and second in his category at the RAC Rally in 1933. As for the Meadows engine, proof of its good health was given at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1935 thanks to the victory of the Lagonda.
Only 52 or 77 models of the Invicta LS were produced, according to sources, and they were always delivered in bare chassis but some of them were not assembled until after the first bankruptcy of the brand which was declared in 1933. Nevertheless, if the adjective "exclusive" can apply to an automobile, the Invicta fully deserves it.

The car exhibited is a rare, if not unique two-seater coupé (+ 2 symbolic) belonging to the same owner since 1972. Its British registration was previously GO 6422. The copy of the previous French Carte Grise shows us that the car was owned by a certain Mr Mclaren living in Paris at 112 boulevard Saint-Germain with the following registration : 248 YP 75. The previous registration number written on this old carte grise is ES 4007.
This impressive low frame Sports Invicta with closed body (opening windscreen), produced in only a handful of models, is unique in France. Black with Havana Peccary interior and green carpeting with Havana piping, it is in very good overall condition and is ready to take to the road along with its normal French vehicle registration document. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a great British sports car from the end of the vintage period.
